How ITSM Stays Running While Extracting Massive Data

This morning, my son missed the first few minutes of his online class meeting.

We seemingly had plenty of time to get set up in advance. But we ran into one of those frustrating sequences of tech failures – an unusually slow laptop boot-up, a few hiccups with the internet browser, a sleepy video app that didn’t want to wake up. It was one of those mornings.

Performance Drag Happens

We all deal with bottlenecks from time to time. And for your service management, it’s critical to clear them.

Unfortunately, an all-too-common scenario emerges. Someone in the company tries to run a report or another job that requires moving lots of data. And this attempt impairs the ITSM tool for the entire company, creating a bottleneck for everyone who uses the tool.

Like a virtual classroom distracted by unmuted elementary children deciding to show off their pets, productive work stops for everyone. Except on your company laptop, while you wait, you don’t even get to watch live showings of cute animals. (The pets, not the kids!)

Run Reports and Keep ITSM Going – Can You Really Have Both?

But reports must be run. Leadership must be informed. Visibility must be present.

And for that to happen, companies must move large volumes of data. How can they do so without immobilizing the production environment?

During a recent webinar, Jane Stone of AbbVie discussed this challenge – and how AbbVie overcame it. Watch the clip from the webinar below.

Transcript – Reporting Without Performance Impact

When you run large reports in ServiceNow, you might slow down ServiceNow to unacceptable levels for the organization. Listen to Jane Stone explain how AbbVie found a scalable path forward for their reporting needs.

When all your data is out there in the cloud you don’t have that ability to just get a DBA to copy the database and you’ve got it elsewhere.

AbbVie as much as possible tried to do the reporting in ServiceNow. We’ve done as much as we possibly can. But you do get to the point where there are things you want to do with the data that would just be too big a performance hit on the system if you created database views or other things to try and do it.

And you just don’t want that hit on your environment. I’ve been – not at AbbVie but at another company that’s using ServiceNow – and somebody created an API and took the system down. So I’ve been in that same position. It’s not good. You’ve got to protect your production environment.

And that’s where for us as well, being able to export the data, using Perspectium and get that out to our data lake to be able to work with it has been a huge plus for us.

Want to try a hands-on, self-paced demo of Perspectium DataSync? It’s the solution that AbbVie and ServiceNow themselves use to automate data extraction in real-time or batch mode for reporting, analytics, and instance synchronization. Check out the live demo.
